A Few People in our AulaNet Environment
We worked together in a distance education course called:
Learning by Doing: New Pedagogical Practices Using An Environment for Distance Education via the Web
May 12 to July18, 2006

Under the guidance of instructors Marisa Lucena and Cristina Pfeiffer, an international group of teacher-students learned to use the AulaNet distance education program. In the "learning by doing" environment, we used and practiced with the facilities of AulaNet. We used a Java-based chat program to hold "live" conferences on specific topics. We used the Conference area for Formal and Informal sharing, questions, posting videos and pictures. Teams collaborated on Powerpoint presentations on multiple intelligences, higher order thinking, right-brain/left brain lesson planning, and how these modalities fit into the world of online Kidlink projects. We learned how to track and assess assignments and progress using Aulanet. We submitted and analyzed papers on constructivism, distance learning, and internet collaboration. Besides e-mail and conference areas, we connected using Skype live video, as well as using Sightspeed video e-mail. In learning by doing, we all came away with the understanding of how to use AulaNet to deliver online learning. Most importantly, we all made some very interesting new friends around the world, and many of us will continue to collaborate as time goes on.

AulaNet is a groupware environment for teaching and learning on the Web. It was developed by the Software Engineering Lab of the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. The AulaNet was developed to separate content from navigation. This lets the teachers concentrate on the production of educational content, using habitual tools such as word processing programs, while leaving the management of the learners' navigation to the environment. Additionally, without much effort, learners can integrate communication, coordination and cooperation services into the course to facilitate and encourage collaboration within a group.

Professors, Mediators, and Students participating in this Distance Learning class are from Brazil, Italy, Japan, Russia, Spain, Denmark, and the United States.
